This past December, 8th-grade Italian students performed a play on La Befana for the younger grades.
According to the Italian legend, La Befana lived on the road the three wise men took on their journey to visit the Christ Child. They approached La Befana’s house as she was very busy cooking and cleaning. They asked Befana if she could come and join them on their journey but La Befana decided not to go. Later, she changed her mind and decided she should have gone with the three kings. La Befana gathered gifts and set off in search for them. She was not able to find them and is still searching to this day. She flies on her broom to each home in Italy that houses a child and brings gifts.
8th-grade Italian students rehearsed the play for weeks and were able to beautifully reenact the story of La Befana all in Italian with an English Narration. The younger students loved it. One student said, "I wish La Befana would come to my house, I hope to meet her in Italy someday." Another student said, "I was able to understand the entire story in
Italian!"
By performing this play, students were able to apply what they have been learning in Italian. They excelled in telling the story of La Befana who plays a big part in Italian culture and tradition.
