Mrs. Rudel's young engineers were given the engineering challenge of building a structure that met the criteria of being 30 cm tall and must stand on its own for 15 seconds. These young engineers worked in small groups discussing, designing, and building their structures. They discovered that by working collaboratively by sharing ideas and using what they knew they were able to accomplish this engineering task.
In a classroom that utilizes engineering solutions we see…
- Teachers incorporating the engineering design process into classroom lessons to expose students to real-world issues
- Students defining problems
- Students collaborating with one another to develop plans and solutions
- Students constructing working prototypes
- Students testing their solutions and redesigning where necessary
- Students participating in active discussions that evaluate engineering solutions
- Students contributing to activities resembling authentic engineering practices and scenarios
- Students considering feedback provided through rubrics to gain skill and become proficient in the use of the 21st century skills and meeting criteria and constraints
