- Reading and spelling 65 new Dolch words* (220 total in grades K–1) and 104 new Sitton words** (208 total)
- Comprehension skills and strategies applied to longer decodable stories
- Vocabulary and fluency skills
- Shared and individual writing; using the writing process
- Grammar, usage, and mechanics skills
* The Dolch list has 220 high-frequency words.
** The Sitton list has 1,200 high-frequency words. Students read and spell 760 of these words in Levels 3–6.
